What to Do With Old Hairdryers, Curling Irons

A standard, non-professional curling iron lasts 1-2 years, according to a spokesperson for Conair. So, getting the most out of this appliance by recycling keeps the materials out of landfills and gives it an additional purpose.
Curling irons, hairdryers and other similar hair appliances can be recycled for their scrap metal rather than thrown away. Although these appliances can’t be put in curbside recycling bins, they are accepted anywhere scrap metal is collected.
Scrap metal recyclers will remove the metal to be used for anything that contains steel – construction materials, cars, appliances and wiring.
“We’ll take anything that is made of at least 50 percent scrap metal, and it can be scrap metal of any kind: steel, aluminum, copper or brass,” says Marti Matsch, director of Media at Eco-Cycle, the oldest and largest nonprofit recycling organization out of Boulder, Colo. “Scrap metal items are important to recover for both environmental and financial reasons.”
According to Matsch, metals are highly recyclable. Unlike other materials like paper, metals do not lose their strength when recycled, and they can be melted down over and over again.
“Recycling these materials prevents the need to mine for metals, which in turn prevents natural resource destruction,” says Matsch.
